Answer first: a personal result should be handled through the clinic, GP, laboratory or home-testing service that issued it. Follow the contact and follow-up instructions supplied with that result. HSE webpages can provide general information and clinic routes, but STI.ie cannot interpret the wording, confirm a diagnosis or recommend treatment.
Choose the source by question
Use the contact route in the result notification or the service account. Ask the issuing service to explain its wording and next step.
Use the current HSE sexual health services and clinics list, then confirm practical arrangements with the clinic.
Use the HSE’s sexually transmitted infections page and its links to current condition pages. General descriptions do not replace advice about a personal result.
Use the instructions and support route supplied by the home-testing provider. Reach the current service through the HSE sexual health services gateway if you need to check that you are on the intended route.
Keep the result context intact
Record the issuing service, test date, notification date, reference number if provided and the exact contact route. Do not paste identifying medical information into public forums, social media or an ordinary website contact form. If another person’s result is involved, protect their privacy as well.
Do not compare isolated words across services
Services may use terms within their own testing and confirmation process. A search result or another person’s screenshot is not a safe interpretation guide. Ask the issuing service what its result language means and which follow-up instructions apply.
